My local supermarket has a film processing counter where they were promoting having your photos printed onto canvas, (and deep frame at that). This got me thinking. What is the advantage of having a photo printed onto canvas so it looks like a painting? What extra does it bring to the image? Wouldn't it be better to have a good enlargement done , mounted and put in a good frame? There is something basically wrong about a photo image crossing genres to look like an art work but I think that this shows that people subconsciously think that paintings are superior to photos and want their snaps to resemble a "real" artwork. However it is all very confusing because people who know nothing about art will often praise a painting by saying that it looks like a photograph! All very rum, shows what a bonkers lot we are .
