There was a program on BBC4 a week ago (Feb 2nd) that I saw last night on 'Catch-up TV'. It was about a pair of artists, Olly and Suzi, painting wildlife, namely predators. Just wondered if any of you saw it? They both paint/draw on the same piece of paper from life so they travel the world to create many of their works, e.g. sitting among a pack of wild dogs in Africa, swimming underwater off the coast of Argentina to paint tiger seals. They apparently have a 'following' of collectors/patrons and can command prices of £500 for a print and upwards of £10,000 for a picture. i started to watch it because it was an art programme then I sat through it trying to understand why they go to such extremes any why their work is so collectable, One example shown, a shark in red paint, had been painted on a board on the deck of the boat after they had gone underwater in a shark-proof cage to sketch the sharks and I'm sure my Grandson could have painted it better! The picture was then smothered in juices to attract a shark so he would take a bite out of it, which he duly did. They do have a website if you want to have a look; some of their work has a 'lively' feel to it but does that justify the expense and carbon footprint of the flights/accommodation/boat and crew hire/etc to go to the different destinations? One surreal moment was when a tracker, the artists, the TV reporter and cameraman were on the trail of a rhino; the cameraman was a bit concerned about being out in the bush with the latter four and no gun (the tracker had gone ahead), "Our Health and Safety won't like it", and they had to return to the car and leave!
