Thats’s good painting for fun, but if we want to go further we need to understand and master the mediums we use. Be it oil, acrylic, charcoal, pencils or whatever. If I was not progressing it would not be interesting to me anymore, and that would be the end of it. I would no longer be content with the outcome, and would loose interest.
With Sarah, Phil, Ellen, Rose the dentist, and the granddaughter whose name I forget.

I agree with that (i.e. with John G I): learning and doing is part of the fun, indeed inseparable from it so far as I'm concerned - happily perhaps, you can never learn enough; I imagine we all interpret fun in different ways, or in a multitude of ways.  Thinking through a process is one  of the most  enjoyable parts of arty life - of course, now and then you'll probably just get carried away and put the paint down with gay abandon, and quite often, that works:  we can all benefit from a little bit o' bloomin' luck, and that's what it's likely to be without planning and  deliberation. Mae West would have liked me - "I like a man who takes his time...": probably she  wasn't thinking about painting, but even so... I do take my time, and seek to  learn and improve by doing so; that's where the fun lies for me,  but I realize others might take a more direct and impassioned approach  - each  to their own.

Enjoyment, satisfaction ( at times), problem solving, continually learning……not sure about the word “ fun” Peter but I know what you mean. But the answers aren’t simple - I too would lose interest if they were. You have to try and look at your efforts with a keen eye, be objective if you can - I think we can all do that after some time has elapsed, I often tweak and alter. I suppose it depends upon how serious you are about your art - a lot of people don’t pick up a brush from one session at the club to the next, art for some is more a social experience and that’s ok too. I’m rambling a bit here…..so I’ll stop….and get back to things connected to art which is collecting some paintings together for an exhibition. John, re phot’d this now, much brighter. But you might find this interesting….I painted this over an oldie while it was still in its frame - how lazy is that?

Perhaps I should have said 'enjoyment'. Of course we need to progress but surely that is enjoyable in itself?

Thank you Marjorie, looks so much better. Not lazy just good economics. I did notice you seemed to have painted over something.  I feel at times getting a decent digital image can be as challenging as doing the painting itself at times. 🥴
