I wonder if anyone would find this new thread interesting enough to contribute?
I was once asked by a member of the community centre, who had been selling a book which I had illustrated, if I would be willing to run an art class there. Scared to death, I quickly replied that I didn't think I would be up to it. 'Why not? 'she said. 'You are an artist.' My automatic response to this was 'Oh no, I'm only an illustrator.'
I have since wondered why that response sprang so quickly to my lips. Was it a shrinking violet response, or is it a sad fact that illustrators and commercial designers are not considered in art circles as "Real" artists? And do we carry this further and extend the same attitude to those who paint popular wall hangings for the furniture stores trade, for example?
