The Viridian and Alizarin challenge was basically about tones - and these two colours produce a wide range of them, as do other greens and reds.  They are of course also complementary colours - I could be fantastically cruel, and suggest a challenge using violet and yellow; which would work better in some media than others, but would be a struggle whatever you used (still; try it and see).<div> </div><div>Instead, I thought I might suggest something a little different, although also about tone - first, a mix of colours you might well not have; Mars Violet Deep, and Cobalt Blue.  I find you can get some beautiful greys with that, adding white in oil and acrylic. </div><div> </div><div>But if you'd have to buy those in (and real Cobalt Blue is expensive) how about a couple of colours you're bound to have: Yellow Ochre (or Raw Sienna) and Burnt Umber?  You could mix the yellow with the Burnt Umber, you could lay a base coat or wash of the yellow, and paint over it with Burnt Umber (and again, probably with white in oil or acrylic: but not essential); you could paint the picture in Burnt Umber and white, and glaze over it with the yellow.  </div><div> </div><div>So many things you could do.  Go on - astonish me.  </div>
