I went to the National Gallery (London) yesterday to see their Corot to Monet exhibition and was taken aback at how poorly presented the works were.
The huge, high-ceilinged rooms dwarfed the art. The paintings had heavy, ornate gilt frames that seemed oppressive on the smaller and more modern works, and the walls were dull mid-tone colours that managed to leech the life out of the art. And the lighting was bad.
The Gallery was obviously built in the High Victorian style, and suits the huge classical, larger than life oils well. However, the small landscapes and impressionist works looked lost.
I went to the Tate recently and they seemed to be able to hang and light their works in a way that complemented them.
Am I being picky?
