First, hello to you all. As you can tell, i'm new here. I signed up for this is the hope that some of you might be able to offer me some tips or advice on a project i've started. I am not someone from an artistic background, but i am trying to help someone who is. My grandfather is a passionate and eccentric artist who has dedicated his life to painting in isolation, but is now suffering the decline of terminal cancer. I have recently relocated to London to spend time with him, and am documenting his life, ethos and regrets, with the aim of having these published and, in turn, granting him his final wish of a chance of recognition in death. My grandfather is a fascinating man who lives to paint. In the 50s he was dubbed the 'angry young man' by a journalist at the Telegraph, while Pierre Rouve and Bryan Robertson expressed repeated interest in his work. However, deeply uncomfortable in the company of other people, he shunned all opportunities to build a name for himself or exhibit alongside established names. He cared not for fame, money, or what anyone thinks of his work. Instead he opted to refine his technique alone and in secret, while being supported by my grandmother, who sadly took her own life 20 years ago. My grandmother's sole wish and motivation was for him to gain some recognition, and this has always haunted him. Now nearing the end of his life, i feel his regret and sadness as he looks around at all he has achieved in secret. What was the point of it all? My grandfather remains insistent that he wants no attention during his lifetime, as this would put him in a place well beyond his comfort zone. But he does hope that some day, when he is no longer around, that his work would be enjoyed by other people. My aim is to grant him this wish by organising an exhibition for him to be held shortly after he dies. This is an ambitious project, not least because- as mentioned previously- i know little of the art world and the formalities of how one goes about organising such things. My aim is to write an article or feature documenting my grandfather's story. I hope for this to be published in a national newspaper, and for it to coincide shortly before the prospective exhibit. I am hoping that what would effectively be free advertising for his exhibit (in the form of the article) would grant me some additional leverage in persuading a reputable establishment to put his work on display. There are, however, some complications. My grandfather is a peculiar kind of perfectionist. Most of his work he destroys. As such, despite painting all day every day for 60 years, he has only kept around 60 pieces. I do not want this to be a quick sale of his work, as he would gain little solace from the thought of his work being hidden away in private collections. Ideally, i would like the article and exhibit to close with a message- that my grandfather's life's work is available for free on guaranteed long term loan to any establishment that can offer to keep it on display to the public. If i can generate enough publicity, i would hope this message and the quality of his work might catch the eye of curators. Of course, this will not be easy. Any place which might show his work would be wanting to make some money. I am more than happy to use my savings (around £5000) to finance the rental of this space, but perhaps it will not be enough. And so i'm interested if you good people have any ideas as to how i might progress with this? How might i go about contacting galleries and persuading them to give an unknown artist space on their walls? Is there such a thing as being too ambitious in this respect? I thought it would be very useful to get his work photographed first, otherwise i have no way to prove to newspapers/galleries that his work is of the quality i say it is, but i have no idea how much i ought to spend on this. The photographs must be good enough to do his work justice, and yet i dont want to spend an unnecessarily large portion of my budget if it would be best saved for other aspects of the project. This project is a labour of love for me, and so i'm very grateful for any tips or advice you may be able to offer. Thanks EDIT- Just to add, my overview doesn't really do his story justice. I would like to have gone into more detail, but i figured i) it's probably best that my first post isn't 3,000 words long, and ii) it would not be wise to copy everything here as i'm compiling it all into a pitch for the newspapers and they perhaps wouldn't like prospective content appearing elsewhere on the net. to paraphrase all that makes his story fascinating would take me all day!
