Wonderful detailed atmospheric pictures of the vanished East End. The artist stopped painting in 2004, discouraged by lack of a market for representational art, but was rediscovered in 2016 and is now painting again. Do go to see if you are in London https://bowarts.org/nunnery/doreen-fletcher-retrospective-2019

Thanks both for the reminder. This does look like a fascinating exhibition of an artist of whom I must admit I hadn’t heard before. It was mentioned in our weekend paper recently and I passed on the details to my daughter who lives a few miles from TheNunnery. I would like to see it myself, and was fascinated by some of the descriptions of the old buildings that Doreen painted. There’s a recurring theme of her spotting an old building/shop/pub and returning sometime later to find it closed/demolished/gone. I love this sort of historical capture of a passing world. Her paintings have really caught the atmosphere of a world largely disappeared, and the characters who lived and worked there. Tessa
