During my Art Society's recent Art Exhibition in July, which is the main exhibition of the year (We hold three exhibitions annually) sales were down considerably. Previously we had sold traditional watercolours, delicately detailed flower paintings and photographically observed wildlife paintings. What we did sell, I think, was an indication that our followers are looking for something new, colourful and uplifting, possibly less "correct" or "tight?" More "With It?" I wonder........Are the general buying public (not the art investors) looking for a break with the past and for something which better answers their needs....We are so swamped with vivid current images via the media, that tastes are bound to be affected. I am not suggesting we return to a string of geese along a wall or the like, but would escapes from reality seem to hold a certain appeal to people today? It would be interesting to see some discussion on this.
