Spent a delightful few hours with the man on IOW who is well known, well thought of and doesn't live in the house I was told of. He gave me crap directions then I found he doesn't drive so that explains a lot amd then I found him walking up the road. We wandered - slowly, up a local path and found no doubt an idyllic spot (for him) in a huge meadow with a view of the sky, a herd of cows, lots of grass, distant hills and an aerial or transmitter. The master did hint that he had painted here many times, gnarled tree trunks etc. We wandered back to my car, retired to a local cafe and had a cup of tea and a rest. A local pub was next, so we enjoyed a drink with a pleasant, huge and well filled sandwich (each). Two old gits put the world to right and it transpired that he knew IOW folk I did, so I took him home and met those folk. The weather was balmy like all week really, apart from a few cool breezes and one cold night, but my wife and I managed. Here are the sketches I did over a week stating with the exciting pencil work with RJ.
I'm envious - to enjoy the company of a like minded soul without any time pressures and doing bags of damn all apart from chuntering and sketching is my idea of heaven. And the resultant sketches are pretty darn good too.
Glad you two old geezers had a good time Derek. Some very good sketching going on there - time well spent. I thought you were away for a fortnight though.
Your time seems to have been well spent, Derek - the weather was a bit hot for me, and I wasn't really dressed for it; but thinking back on it, you would probably have done better - given you like everyday things to draw and paint, rather than the pretty bits - to have sketched the house I live in; all sorts of nooks and crannies and corners, but it's a bit late to think of that now, of course.... Up on the Downs - as we almost were, actually it turns into a cliff path, if only we'd had the energy to persist further along it - was a bit of a mistake from my point of view, because the sun was strong and thanks to my wretched eye all the shadows turned pea-green. Your top sketch isn't far from my own - if you develop it, and I do too, it'll be interesting to see what we separately make of it. Oh, and I realized why Derek wanted to move on from the café to the pub for lunch: you couldn't get beer in the café....... http://www.isleofwightlandscapes.net http://www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk
Very nice indeed...pity you cant go back next week for Cowes week...some good sketching opportunity there I should think D
Thanks all, enjoyed the whole week - characters, beers, places and decent weather. Robert to read that my downs pencil work is near to yours is a great honour. If I work it up - a big if, let's see. I have notified several of the IOW HHH that I met Tumblweed and Chris. In an hour we will be on the road to Sunny?? Bournemouth to lodge my stuff in the on-site store ready for the morning. My wife is coming with me to help then stay the night before leaving me all on my lonesome. Looking forward to it - and the exhibition!
