Good morning everybody.  Is there somebody that can help me to ready this signature on a paint ring?  Looks like to be a 18th century landscape panorama.  Thank you very much for your time.  Michele
I sense a collective 'NO' coming on......... Can't even be sure what the first letter is: 'l' and 'e' look to be in there somewhere, early on.  So ALL we need to do is find an artist with 'l' and 'e' in their name; identify the country and language of origin; work out if that last set of marks is suppose to be a date ( 'O9'? ) and then: we still won't know, probably.  IS it 18th century?  You say it looks like an '18th century landscape panorama', but do we take it from this that you haven't actually seen the whole painting?   You're not giving us a huge amount to work with here!
Michelle  why not go to the art houses and pick their brains.  You can find as much about this as we can . It’s so lovely that you believe we are magicians...😊
Apologies to all about this post but the current owner won’t disclose the full picture at the moment. Tomorrow I will try to convince her and I’ll post it for the satisfaction of all ! I’m very curious to know much about this painting. Thank you for your help at the moment. Very kind of you!
Dear all, my friend acknowledge to publish the picture of the painting. Any clue on it? Thank you very much, Michele
I agree with Robert and Sylvia.   I would suggest going to an auction house, most of them do valuations (some of which may be free of charge) and might be able to ID the painter.    As far as I am aware, most of the people who post on this site, are leisure painters, with a smaller number of professional or semi-professional artists.   I think it is unlikely that there is anybody on here regularly that knows a lot about old paintings, especially with so little information.   I hope you have success in finding out more about it for your friend.
O.K. thank you Margaret for your help. I approached this channel since my friend is very old, he's affectionate to this painting and just asked me if I can do some research :) I'll follow your advise. Thanks a lot, M
is this anything like the signature on the painting
can be actually... I was thinking about Israel Hershberg but i feel like he's too contemporary for this painting and can't find on literature anybody who's elder than him
The painting needs the attentions of a conservator anyway - this would be an opportunity to get that rent in the canvas repaired, and find out something about the painting's construction; from which it would be easier to search out who might have painted it.  I'm not aware of Hershberg, and will see what I can find out.  But that canvas needs to be cleaned, re-lined, and repaired - this will  be quite expensive, but would be well worth doing if the painting is of either commercial or sentimental value.
And no - this isn't an Israel Hershberg; Hershberg, I discover, is 71, and that alone rules him out: this is much, much older than that.
