Has anyone else had this happen? Where they just lose their mojo? Their ability to do anything most days? Im still thoroughly enjoying looking at other peoples works, im just finding im not actually doing much myself. Whats wrong with me? Is it normal? I have never had this before. I can always do some form of art daily but the last few weeks i have really hit a block, and i havent wanted too. Arrgghhh why? Today i realised i haven't even opened this months magazines, they are still lay unopened on the bedside tables. This is so not me. Anyone got any ideas to get me back into the swing, without me feeling like i want to run a mile?
Bet the kids are still on holiday Jen? . It happens to us all especially if your life is busy in other directions. Don’t fret it will all happen all over again so just relax , don’t worry . Whilst the little sweeties are home , why not set up,an art programme just for them ? . Something messy and colourful , you just might get drawn in. Sorry about the pun.
Yes Jen. Sometimes I think I will never touch my.brushes again...then an idea settles and after a week of thought I will get a sheet of paper out and let it sit there on the easel as something forms, then Ill maybe do a drawing and ponder on that for a week or two. Then it starts
Yep, perfectly normal; and all you can do is go off and do something else until you come back into the sunshine again.
Don't force it - I often have periods when I don't want to do a anything, and indeed I don't do anything.... you get over these times eventually. You're not alone!
I see where you're coming from Robert - I'm in a position where most commissions I work on don't have deadlines. But what to do if there is a deadline? Just force it? It's a funny one when you start to look at art as a commercial proposition. Anth
My mojo might not be missing, but it's in a sad way...it's up on jacks with the tyres missing and going nowhere fast. Can't really get going on anything much more than sketches, when I try something I'm disappointed. Luckily I just do this arty lark for fun, so I'm under no pressure to complete things. What's going on around you certainly has an effect. My wife's been very poorly lately, but she's getting better (despite my cooking), so maybe things will start to look up. So Jen, I'm hoping my mojo will resurface with brand new go faster tyres and a new MOT. Hope yours does too. If things don't improve maybe I'll take a month off...after which I should be aching to start again. Lew.
Sorry to hear that Lew and I do wish your wife a speedy recovery. I love your recent sketches - even "up on jacks with the tyres missing" . I know the feeling of just not being able to get inspiration, and wish you and Jen all the best with recovering yours, I am sure that your mojo will come back after it's had a bit of downtime.
Commissions and deadlines - well, if you're into that degree of professional involvement, you really have to meet them somehow. Happily, I've been able to do that when those circumstances have arisen, but I think many clients - NOT professional ones who expect you to perform - make allowances for a bit of artists' block. It depends on what you're trying to do - people might wait for a portrait, or landscape featuring their house or dog; but those who want illustrations for books or magazines won't use you again if you can't produce work on schedule.
As everyone has said Jen it comes to us all at some point, I use to have several things on the go at most times but then hit the wall so to speak, to the point the spiders and their webs knew my papers and brushes better than I did, but then I decided to just start doing little scribbles every day, they did not have to be anything in particular but I found the simple action of putting pen or pencil to paper just kept a little spark going even if I did have sheets of paper filled with lots of little meaningless doodles, which of course ended in the bin eventually. Never fear it will come back.

As others have said Jen you are by no means alone, over the last two years my mojo has been like a poor kite, more down than up, I start a painting then loose interest and it stays half done for weeks though in that time I have enjoyed other interests, but that's just me, fingers crossed I seem to have my enthusiasm back now but it has happened to me many times over the years so I am used to it. In the meantime just find something that you enjoy doing and I am sure that in a few days all will be well, good luck Rob Ward
I thought I was the only one who had run out of petrol. My wife died six weeks ago after a losing fight with cancer. Death brings with it endless form-filling and that is all done. Like Jeni I too have reading matter lying untouched and wonder what will get me up and running again. Today would have been our 60th wedding anniversary which makes it worse. Oonagh was my driving force and most of my contemporaries living locally have already checked out so I do wonder what the future will bring. Sketcher
