I teach a bunch of people in my studio on Wednesday mornings so this is my let off steam moment.Someone comes in with a small, out of focus photo of a relative taken inside under artificial light so he is all orange coloured, gets out a dirty tin plate covered with blobs of old dried up oil paint squeezed out at random, some splayed withered brushes and a slack nasty canvas from the pound shop and announces she would like to paint a portrait of the person and can I help her? It does amaze me that beginners (and not so beginners) think that they can produce an acceptable painting from the cheapest most basic materials and information, and as a tutor I try my best and tell her that the best results come from the best equipment but I have been saying this for the last six months but so far with little results, they want to produce a good painting but they want to produce it on the cheap. So I start again....
