Recently re watched a film "Archipelago" about a middle class family on holiday in the Scilly Isles and the tensions that arise. (Very good by the way, do try to see). Anyway while there the mother and daughter have lessons from a local landscape painter. At one point the mother says looking at her effort, "well having fun is the main thing". The painter replies "actually it's not the main thing". That made me think, no he's right, doing a good painting is the main thing, the fun should come as a by product of doing a good piece of work. I am not saying that one should be miserable while painting and obviously it feels good when it is going well, but we should be aware that often we feel frustrated that things aren't going right, and i hear this phrase so many times from people to excuse a light hearted approach to painting. What do you think, is having fun the main point of painting?
