Why do some artists go starry eyed about granulation , even to the extent of buying stuff to produce it.?,I dislike it when it appears in a sky which has Ultramarine as its blue colour. Granulation is ok for some aspects of landscape for a bit of texture on rocks etc.but I dont like it in light washes or large areas where it appears unnatural. Especially in skies which I like to use Ultramarine for ! Syd
Well I don't mind a bit of granulation especially on roofs and in foliage and even in skies but I can see an argument against it the closer you get to photorealism. As for granulation medium I do use quite a lot of it in my abstract acrylic work where I am almost solely concerned with colours, textures and composition.
Thank you Syd for your Christmas wishes but I'm sure we will be all 'talking' before the big day! I'm glad you mentioned granulation as I'm not a big fan of it either. The SAA do make a non-granulating ultramarine watercolour which I've tried and found it to be good.
