After some remarks by Bloodaxe in another thread, I thought it would be interesting to start a thread on artists you just don't get. This isn't about what you hate, but artists you know are good or even great and who you respect, but they just don't connect on an emotional level.
My main one is Turner. I know he is amazing but his stuff just leaves me indifferent. I think it is because in many ways he is the complete opposite to me. He is an outdoor painter, I am studio based, his stuff is wildly gestural, I like harmony and order . Rembrandt is the same, a lot of his stuff looks stagey to me and I really don't like all that swirly, gestural impasto paint, in fact I tend to not connect with artists who use thick paint generally, although there are some exceptions for instance Frank Auerbach.
So lets hear yours, remember it is not for who you hate, just good stuff that fails to connect with you, and try to say why.
