I have been using acrylic to paint something for a competition in our WI's federation show in July. I am now on my third attempt! The first one had been three quarters finished and then I messed up, could have cried; painted over the part I did wrong with some gesso but when it dried it left a significant line which I couldn't cover up, so I tried again. That was hopeless and only fit for the bin so i am now waiting for my gesso to dry and i will attempt it for the third time. It's so frustrating, it's not as if I could change the subject as this is given in the programme. The class for art is called "One man and his dog" difficult or what??? I decided to do the back view of the man as I can't do faces, and the front of the dog. I'm determined it's not going to beat me and am hoping that third time lucky works for me!!!
They say one of the beauties of acrylic is you can keep reworking it but if you make a mistake in a dark colour on a light area it seems like ten coats of white won't cover it. It maybe very frustrating to keep restarting but if you are learning something with each attempt possibly the third will be a charm. Good luck and try not to be discouraged.
Don't use gesso to cover it, because it won't. Use your heaviest artist quality Titanium White instead. You may need two coats. Acrylic gesso can be used as a (relatively) economical white paint, but not as a reliably opaque cover-all for something that's gone wrong; it's not intended for that.
Can't give any advice on this medium, but I do wish you all the very best on a successful outcome, Margaret.
Good luck Margaret. Frankly, one man and his dog opens a whole host of ideas in my mind...but then, I'm not in the challenge. D
You have my sympathy Margaret. It always amazes me how many coats of acrylic it takes to cover. Thats one reason why I now finish off in oil paint as there seems to be more pigment in it.
