No not the TV program! This was bought to my attention yesterday and I wonder if any one else is aware of it? Apparently the freedom of "taking photographs in public places" is under attack by the EU mandarins. Julia Reda MEP tried to bring the "Freedom of Panorama" to all EU countries as apparently a few countries such as France and Italy do not have this freedom law which gives anyone the right to photograph public buildings, sculptures, works of art etc, without seeking the owners permission. However it now appears the Mandarins have reversed her proposals and instead of giving the law to the few countries that did not have it they now propose to take it away from those that do! It would mean that you would have to obtain the permission and possibly pay the architect concerned before you could publish on Facebook, your own website or elsewhere, any street, architectural or sculptural photograph you have taken. Sounds utterly insane to me and begs the question would it apply to paintings of the same subjects? I rather suspect it would, below is a link to the Julia Rada website. https://juliareda.eu/2015/06/fop-under-threat/
Utterly insane. Not sure how they would police it .
Its not so much how they would police it Sylvia, I think policing it would be as impossible as it is in policing the current copyright laws which are constantly broken with impunity, the problem as with all copyright issues, would rather be the uncertainty of someone demanding you either remove your work, pay up or be sued. Lets hope sense prevails and that the massive protest thats building stops it in its tracks, but then this is the EU we are talking about, so perhaps not! Rob
Ah I missed that post TB, probably due to my laptop being on the blink and deciding its gona sulk and sulk and not come out to play, going to have to rebuild tomorrow but reduced to a very very old desktop until then, dont you just love Microsoft crap!.... Like you though I am not overly concerned as I'm unlikely ever to sell hundreds or even dozens of copies and so will never get sued.. Going to make severe problems for photographers and the likes of Wikipedia, Facebook, Google etc though.
Just out. The EU members of parliament have shown some sense (at last) in rejecting the proposal to stop people taking pictures of public buildings https://juliareda.eu/2015/07/eu-parliament-defends-freedom-of-panorama-calls-for-copyright-reform/
