At this moment I find that with a little effort I could completely dominate the forum. my dial is all over the posts . Now that is not intentional . Its just that nobody else is there at the time Where are all the ladies who comment very well on the gallery but not here I could give names of these ladies who used to grace the forum in the past but they know who they are. I could say the same about the shortage of chaps. The Forum is in danger of being taken over by "regulars " as some guy called us but it would shut down otherwise or at least "drag its feet" or worse ,let some not so nice people drop in. ...Cheers ...Syd

Hi Syd,
I'm new here and while not entirely silent am subject to the bashfulness of being a 'new kid at school'.
Personally I'd love to see an ongoing thread of members wips - yes I know they can be posted to the Gallery (or to a blog) but I'd really enjoy a snap or two of the progress of a picture along with a few words describing the thought processes involved. It fascinates me how we can all see the same thing and view it differently. I've commented a bit on the Gallery but tbh there are a LOT of paintings there with only a few familiar forum names.
Ok, going to hit reply before I realise I'm talking utter twaddle and delete ;)

WIPs would be good, yes - never occurred to me..... They don't really suit the gallery itself, at least not too many of them, but if we had a thread here, doesn't necessarily need a separate subject heading, it might well be of interest.
On the same old faces routine .... I feel very much the same as Syd about this: I keep posting, and often feel I'm overdoing it - but then: a) I've usually got something to say, b) I suppose I try to make up for those that haven't. I shouldn't be offended if anyone told me to shut up for a while - murderous, yes; obviously. Insanely violent. But not offended... The place does fluctuate though - people come and go, and at various times we're looking a touch on the desolate graveyard side; but then the whole thing springs back to life again.... as is the case with many forums. I think Facebook - which I'm trying hard to avoid now, for many reasons - is drawing people away from forums like this. But then when you have a problem and want an answer, this is the better place to visit. I wouldn't give up on POL yet - I'm not the longest-standing contributor by any means, but I can remember having this conversation several times in the past, and things have woken up again.

Trouble with my WIPS (and I agree, you don't want too many of them) is that they tend to fall into two stages - the preliminary sketching (the dead layer, as some call it) and then, bang, the completed picture as I do rather tend to get on with it, with breaks for a nice lie down or a cup of tea, without much further ado (have you ever noticed the number of painting demonstrators on TV or video who spend a while telling you what they're going to do, and then say "well, without further ado....", and get on with it?).
As to where to put them - could be under the appropriate painting heading, watercolour, oil, acrylic, maybe? Too late to show my latest, because I cracked on with it last night and think I've finished it..... I hope an article I did for LP will see the light of day before they carry me out feet first, which does feature a WIP. In that particular case, I deliberately broke it down into stages, having always intended to write about it. But if you don't normally do that, it might impose something of a strain on the process...
Anyway, we'll see. The bigger the painting, the more scope for stages - perhaps I'll work on a bigger canvas or paper next time.

I have asked where should WIPs go and got answers, in the gallery.
Then I started on a piece which was intended for a WIP and got to second stage photo and then I got tired of it and moved on. It is still there glaring at me and I will get back to it, but my clumsiness and shaky hands set me back in frustration and give up mentality. I maybe back.

A lot of forums have the ability to pin a thread to make it sit at the top of a sub forum. This would require the intervention of the admin staff if it's a tool available to this particular forum. To justify a 'sticky' thread I imagine there would have to be seen a need for such.
I mentioned a WIP thread earlier as I'd love to see the stages of how others work and learn of any techniques used that may not always be apparent in the finished piece and a forum lends itself more to encourage discussion than the comments section in the Gallery.
As to the 'where' that's not entirely an easy one to suggest an answer other than if a need was justified the admin team could be asked to create a new sub forum just for WIPs. Generally (and I don't know the mechanics of this particular forum) this is a straightforward enough thing to set up.

Hi everyone. I haven't been on the site for quite some time and glad to see the forums are surviving! I think Prestige User is right about the social network sites. I myself are not on any of them and I would prefer small forums like this over any of those. Hope to be here more often. Life and distractions get in the way sometimes!!!!
