I don't know if anyone else saw this on Sunday, but stop reading now if you haven't and don't want to know the result. The portrait was attributed to Thomas G. but I was surprised they didn't spot an obvious flaw in their reasoning. They compared it with a portrait that was virtually identical except for the features of the sitter, same coat and everything, and assumed that it must be by the same hand. But to me it suggested that someone else had perhaps copied the other portrait so exactly and painted different features, the rest was so exactly the same. Also to me the head looked as though it was by a different artist to the coat, more basic and wooden and certainly lacked the fluidity of a gainsborough, they did remark he looked a bit wrong at one point but this wasn't followed up. But then again, what do I know?
