Hi j.peers, i think organizers of the competition want to see portraits of peoples faces. why not paint some just for the competition. so you may not think you can do portraits. but the organizers have ask for them, to get a overall representation of the artist and what they can do.
It does seem strange to mix subject matter with genres, I wonder if the organisers know what they are doing? You are right to query it.
I think it should be ok-as they did not define portrait-ie people/animal-
I am fed up with the amount of watercolour tube paints that I waste. If I don't paint for a few days, it all dries up and even although I have ways of re-hydrating it, I find the paint quality has suffered. Does anyone use watercolour pans? That seems to be the answer to me as it is supposed to dry up between painting sessions and seems to tolerate re-hydrating a lot better. The reason I haven't gone over to pans so far is because of my expensive brushes. I found that you had to scrub a little too hard on the pans to get them workable which would ruin the tips. Is there a way to over come this - perhaps use an old brush first? Thoughts and feedback experience on using pans needed please.
