Just been listening to In our time with Melvyn   Bragg on Radio 4. A discussion about Vincent Van Gogh.  Well worth a listen I will find it again on catch up. Incidentally one of my favourite paintings of his The Potato Eaters  was not done when his mental facilities were declining, as I have been told.on here. His work still excites and inspires .  Worth looking for.

Who told you that?   The Potato Eaters was surely one of his earlier works - his mental health seems never to have been good, but it wasn't "declining" at that point.   I didn't hear the broadcast, but will look out for it on the BBC website.
Twas a comment on here .   Do have a listen.
I'll listen out for that, Sylvia.  Oddly enough, last night I watched the Schama Power of Art episode featuring Van Gogh. He said that the critics panned this picture when Theo first showed it. After Schama's very thin episode on Jaques Louis David, this was a good overview.
Critics again - hardly a useful human being among any of them.
Thanks for the reminder Sylvia. I did hear it mentioned, then forgot to listen. Will catch it again.
