Just been having a look at watercolours....and taken a very big gulp. Are Daniel Smith watercolour tubes so much better than say shmminke or sennelier or even W / N ? . They are HUGE money. Any thoughts or experience ?
I don't think I could cope with the experience of parting with that sort of money. He does source some unusual minerals to produce his product, but does it really show on the paper?

W&N are fine for me Sylvia, it gets a bit ridiculous to pay so much for paint when it's only a hobby. Perhaps if I were selling my work I would have a re-think but for now I'll stick to what I have. Saying that I haven't done a watercolour for ages as I seem to be in love with my Faber Castell pencils at the moment.
You would have to be fanatically into watercolour, and be using it as your main medium, AND have a yen for exotic pigments, to fork out the kind of money Daniel Smith are asking for their paints. Ask yourself this: did Turner, Constable, John Crome, Fletcher-Watson, Wesson, use Daniel Smith watercolours? No, obviously not. Use good paint - if you can get it, use great paint: but unless you know what you're doing with it, and perhaps even then, it's not the paint that makes the painter.
