This arises out of the watercolour thread on alla prima colours, but applies to all media so I have posted here. I was brought up never to use premixed secondary colours (green, orange, purple), always mix from primaries. Also never to use black.
I now buy premixed greens to a) save time, especially outdoors, b) avoid using lots of expensive paint to get the colour I want, c) maintain consistency. I also have a lovely Azure Blue from the Cryla acrylic range. Tubes of premixed colours list what they are made of, so you can vary the colour without losing clarity by adding one or more of the original colours.
Black can look at odds with the rest of the picture, but can be very effective. I often mix it with ultramarine to get greater depth.
