I heard yesterday, University Challenge, if my memory serves me well, that Turner was once said to have been berated for using black in a painting, answering with words along the lines - If I could have found a colour, blacker than black, I would have used it.Throughout the art world, and throughout time, so it seems, there has been an aversion to black, rather odd really, we paint to create something and use the material that suits the purpose of the subject and painting, not to be tied to petty little laws. If using black doesn't suit you then fine, if using black does, then fine, just like using body colour in watercolours, fine, if that's what gives you the result you want.If using black and body colour was good enough for Turner, then it is good enough for me, and it is said that black was an ever present colour for the Impressionists.Just a little thought from something heard.bestMick
