I was at a lecture yesterday by Dr Susan Carr on her work in art therapy, specifically portrait therapy. Excellent work and very fascinating.
She explained and showed how by busing portraiture she allowed individuals who were at end of life or terminal illness stages to regain their individuality. Very moving stuff, many tears in the house.

When I first read your posting, I thought it meant that patients paint their own portraits. I've found a copy of Dr Carr's thesis (see the link) and it seems the patient discusses the themes to be included in the picture. Dr Carr then paints the patient's portrait, so in a way the patient is a co-originator.
