Radio 4 today. An in depth analysis of (I think), Seurat’s Sunday on la grande jatte. A high res image is available online to follow the analysis. It’s a very interesting idea and there was a similar series a year or so back. I couldn’t follow it as I was driving and missed the start (hence my (I think)). What I heard was disappointing largely because it concentrated on the formal elements of composition which I find to be a somewhat stiff, stilted and dare I say, tedious approach (yes I dare; I just did).
I would also be much more interested if the choices included more contemporary works; Hockney would be an obvious choice but one of the abstract expressionists would be interesting too, or Freud or . . .

John, Maybe they picked it because it is a painting from the beginning of the modern era. There is a 10 minute analysis of the work on youtube touching it´s history and composition.

I think you're right, Pat. I listened to the programme while giving my sheep a pedicure, so my listening was sporadic. Was he depicting the beginning of the decline of social class by placing well dressed people, in the shade, but still well away from urban stress. It is said his painting 'Bathers at Asnieres' symbolises future change within France, by placing the bathers in sunlight.
I like to listen to people's thoughts on the narrative they see within a painting, and there was, in this instance, a delightful comment about colours - yellow and purple within the shadows of grass-
Lovely. I hope there'll be more prog's like this to come.
