<p style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt" class="MsoNormal">I’ve just read an article In January’s Artist by a Jackie Simmonds which seems to be decrying the practice of starting at the top of the painting and working down instead of working all over the picture in layers to bring the thing to completion.Once again, an artist trying to legislate for art and telling us how we should do it.Perhaps if she were to write in the first person instead of the second, and get rid of those pompous ‘yous’, she would at least be saying something along the lines of, look, this is how I do it, give it a try. What works for any particular artist is surely the best way to go for that artist, it's nothing important or Earth shattering, as long as it has been found out by effort, modifying and tweaking  learned methods along the way.I work from the top left and across and down to the bottom right, it is the best way for me, as I am sure that her way is the best way for her.  I work the way I work cos I have to work fairly flat and rest my painting right hand on the surface.  Injured shoulders from rugby in my youth means that I can’t work upright on an easel.   It would be a fair old mess if I were to work her way, no I can’t use a mahl stick, tried but I have never got the hang of them, it may be the arthritis in my thumbs and wrists..bestMick
