I have always been optimistic when it comes to teaching , thinking that everybody has potential to be a competent artist if not a good one, but I think I have met my match with one of my people. He has been coming now for about 3 years and seems to have learnt nothing. I have tried my best, I show him how to set out his colours in a logical order, he still just puts blobs all over the palette. I show him how to mix them, he just shovels it up with his brush and mixes it like he was mixing cement. I show him how to put small delicate touches on the painting , he scoops the paint up and scrubs it into the canvas and I have lost count of the number of times I have shown him how to clean his brushes but he still regularly tries to paint with ones clogged up with dried paint.Needless to say he cannot draw. It is not as though he is stupid, he is wealthy, a self made man you could say who runs a business, but he is not a painter. Am reluctant to tell him the truth because I am too nice, but wonder if he would be better off doing bricklaying instead as a more useful hobby suited to his talents.
