In another post I referred to Pinterest and it prompted me to wonder how many others use it and how. It’s such an excellent research tool I’d be more than a bit lost without it. I organise some boards by artist, some by subject, some by technique/ medium. I look at the boards of other people, especially if they pin one of my pins (if they like that too they may have something I like) and although the “You might like” links the system throws up are often ridiculous—throws up is the right term—sometimes it turns up with a gem. I often create temporary reference boards for a specific project. These will usually be private boards as I use the description text for my own notes. Just like I used to do in a sketchbook.
John it’s good to hear your interest in Pinterest I must be a bit on the slow side as I can never work out what it’s about.
We use it at work to compile mood boards, it's great for that kind of thing.
I often do 'image' searches in google, either for reference or sometimes to look up an artist. At least 50% of the time the images are on pinterest. So I use it often I guess, but I haven't 'joined' it so I don't produce boards myself. A useful resource indeed. Lew.
Sylvia. It's about whatever you want it to be about really. It's an online pin-board where you can 'pin' stuff you find on the net. People use it for all kinds of things; recipes, fashion, interior decorating, gardening etc., etc. Almost all of my boards are art-related, so I 'pin' drawings and paintings that inspire me. I have boards for drawings, paintings, life drawing—whatever subject you care for. Anyone can see your pins unless you make the board 'Private' in which case only you and anyone you appoint can see them. It's main advantage (for me) is that it gives very flexible ways to group and organise the images. The system also suggests 'similar' images. This might be based on the artists name ('More like this…') or might be the system using the image as a reference point, so that if your painting has a lot of blue at the top you'll get a lot of sky photos; it's not very sophisticated. But occasionally it does turn up trumps. One of my regular uses for my life drawing board is that whilst I have my morning tea before I go to the life-drawing group, I sit browsing through the examples of life drawings I have collected. It always inspires me, gets me in the mood and frequently moves me to experiment with a new approach. Lew. Yes Pinterest usually comes up high in the rankings on image searches. It may just be that there are so many images on Pinterest that it's bound to turn up something or it may be that 'they' (I forget who it is for the minute that operates it) pay to make sure they come high.
John, I did join it some time ago but kept getting bombarded with emails, each time someone liked one of the images I'd pinned - I never used to put my own - I got another annoying email telling me someone I'd never heard of liked an image that I'd pinned. I soon stopped using it. Can you use it without this annoyance? It sounds a good way to organise images you like but I don't want the emails.
Pat, thank-you very much. I'll have another look at it. Thanks too for the useful list of websites for free pictures to use. A starting point is very useful.
