Just for fun......... What is the single best piece of advice you would give to an aspiring artist? No 1 - Practise sketching as much as you can to improve your observation skills. No 2 anyone?

I use discarded plastic film spool containers , add just a small amount of masking fluid then add water say 50/50, less water if the masking fluid is a weak brand . Never more than1/4" depth total so that "when" you knock it over trying to control a wayward wash only a small amount spilt. .

You can just use Copydex. (lol) I can`t imagine using enough masking to warrant making it. Do you do a lot of snow scenes then?
