The YAS exhibition has finished today. The quality of works submitted was very good. There has been some sales, about 23 pictures out of 189. Unfortunately I can not confirm the subjects of the pictures that were sold to the public. And unfortunately none of mine were amongst them. I popped into one of the galleries on the way home. Had a chat with the manager inside. She had a look at my pieces (2 wildlife pieces and a landscape). She said she loved the big cat but added that wild-life is not selling well at the moment, especially exotic one (big cats etc). She said local wild life like hares, deer does sell, but the quality has to be very high because of stiff competition. She also said that local views of York sell, but on a small scale. Tourist targeting. So I asked her what is "hot" at the moment? She said "quircky" things and pointed to some views of town with "lopsided roofs and houses" and other pieces that have kind of "illustration" style to them. She gave a business card in case I come up with some interesting works that might fit in and sell. I am looking for new subjects to paint and was chatting to one of co-members of YAS facing the same problem of finding more subjects that would sell. Flower-Power? I asked her. And she said she finds that botanicals did not do well previously. Animals very difficult to match to the buyer. In the end she said: " You never really know what is going to sell". So the BIG QUESTION is : What subjects you find that sell to the general public.
