Stayed just outside London for a few days and visited The Smoke a few times to see some exhibitions. For the first time in years went to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, which has changed so much from its old fashioned crusty image. Galleries full of light, filled with everything from the latest light work by James Turrell and thick encrusted paintings by Anselm Keifer through to the more staid academic oils of the few remaining old academicians.Inspiring. Then on to the BP Portrait exhibition at the National Portrait gallery, where there are so many stunning paintings. Also went to the National Gallery to the Making Colour exhibition which shows how colours were used and manufactured in the past, from early Egyptian Fayum portraits to the artificial colours that enabled Impressionist painters to be more portable. Interesting in the light of the discussion around cadmium colours at the moment. Also whilst Dahn Sarf, went to somewhere I have always wanted to go, Charleston, in Surrey, home of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant and various Bloomsburys, every square inch of furniture and wall is decorated by the two artists and their children. And the gardens were amazing. A good cultural blitz.
