Hot pressed paper is going to be smooth, and maybe that's the problem.  Hahnemuhle make a number of papers,  including a torchon that I was very taken with; the snag was getting more of it - I'll have a go when finances pick up again.  It's hard to understand why wet on dry just sinks in, whereas wet on wet simply sits on the paper ..... don't understand that.  Which is no help to you at all, of course - not one of those papers with a right and wrong side, is it?
yes I have some here in my bag .and it is exactly as you say a rather dry paper .. and one sided to boot...ah papers ,,,different styles of painting in watercolors and different subjects do need different papers(drat spell checker COLORS) I think for portraits done quick and loose its passable but for .landscapes no its not for me its to dry.///////////////but for detailed flower painting it may be ok I have not tried it. I.ll give it -- 4 out of 10 and I am being generous
Can't help yet Chrissie - I bought a Hahnemuhle HP 10 sheet block in April but haven't had a chance to use it. I bought it at an open day fair held by botanical artists and a local arts supplier had a stall. The girl told me it was excellent so I bought it assuming she knew what she was talking about. Thinking about this I remember posting about a conversation I had with her about Winsor Newton watercolours and she said something that appeared not to be true - as she stocked another brand I now realise this may have been a sales ploy. However until today I've not heard anything bad about Hahnemuhle so don't throw it out the window yet. I have to admit though to just checking through my small treasured book collection by admired botanical artists and - where any of them actually recommend named brands - Hahnemuhle is not one of them. I'll give it a go though and see how I get on - I need a bit of a push to get started again though. .. I'll keep you posted and likewise, if your world gets back into kilter with it you can let me know. Good luck. Otherwise it's an expense you could do without.
Well since posting I feel a lot better having had that little moan! I took a deep breath, counted to ten and tried again. It is going a little better and have decided not to throw it all out of the window just yet. I agree with your comments about it being a dry paper and thank you Robert it hadn't occurred to me that I might be using the wrong side. I will try that. Perhaps it is a paper for the really experienced as I have noticed the surface is very easily damaged. I will persevere as I don't like to be beaten. Thanks for your comments.
Thank you for having a look and maybe posting a comment on Robert's violet and yellow challenge. http://www.painters-online.co.uk/Gallery/Mia-Ketels-Roberts-Challenge--2/_ga96634_pg1
