I would like to go for selection to Patchings Exhibition this year but, pardon my ignorance, I don't know how to go about it. When 2D works are sent, do you send the original(s) in the post or submit an emailed photo? All of my stuff is in pastel. Is there a good way to make sure that it arrives un-smudged? I really am a novice.
Hello Paul, haven t you asked this question back in November? ;-) http://www.painters-online.co.uk/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=2710&posts=15 Anyway, when starting a seach I have noticed it is essential to select the search period. Without it the system assumes you only want to know about new items since your last visit to the forum.
Although you may have posted this a number of times it seems no-one has replied. I am new here, but maybe can help a little. Never use flash on the camera, you will get reflections from glass or varnish or highlights on the paper where there shouldn't be. Never photograph in the midday sun for the same reasons. Do not photograph under flourescent bulbs or you will get a green tinge, a yellow one if you photograph under normal household bulbs. I've always found (if you don't have proper lighting etc or the space) that photographing outside in bright but not sunny conditions works best. Make sure the painting is standing square on an easel or chair and make sure you are square to the painting. Most cameras these days will take adequate pictures on the automatic setting. If everything continues to have a tint even when you scan I would think to calibrate my monitor.
It is ok to use flash on the camera, as long as it isn't the flash that is part of the camera, that really is only good for snapshots and really has no place on a serious camera.  A directional flash at low power fitted on the hot shoe or on a bracket and then bounced off the ceiling or a reflector is fine.  Always use a tripod or other means to keep your camera still.  I don't have enough room in my area to use a tripod so I use the bounced flash method to freeze the thing to avoid blurring from camera shake.  I also have a clip on, daylight reading lamp that I can place to best effect, when photographing paintings.bestMick
