Does anyone else remember any of their very first paintings that may have inspired them to do more?
I was about 9. Cadburys had a National Competition for schoolchildren to design and paint a plate representing Easter. I painted one with daffodils, chicks and crosses round the border and I won the National first prize. I still have the certificate LOL.
The prize was one of those gigantic Easter Eggs that stood about 4 foot high and my headmistress refused to let me have it. She wrote to Cadburys saying it was unfair that one child should get something so big so they sent a cream egg for every child in the school instead. Did she really think I could eat a 4 ft egg all by myself?
I also became a Cadburys taster as a result. They sent a box of all their new flavours every month and I had to eat them and report on whether I liked them. What a great prize for a 9 year old!
I also remember being ill with scarlet fever and being given a paper dressing up doll. Instead of playing with it I copied all the clothes and coloured them in.
