Rubbing does dull it down and doesn't look the same. I like Jackie Simmonds way of applying which has no rubbing involved and her pics look fresh and vibrant. I need to practice more though to get mine to look anywhere near as good as hers.
Rubbing has always been a stock technique of pastellists. It's a widely accepted method for underpainting. But the joy of pastel painting is the use of the drawn mark to create interest and texture. Rubbing was once used to create softly modelled portraits - currently gone out of fashion. You are on the right path to follow John Blockley's method.Have a look at PS members work on the Pastel Society website Moira Huntly and Bob Last show some interesting work Here's the URL http://www.thepastelsociety.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=46&Itemid=54
It was still useful - especially to me, as I have trouble with pastel, and only use it as a sketching medium.  Reminds of of Mick's/Bloodaxe's pastels, which were among the best things he did; are they still on the site, I wonder...?
Thanks for that Robert will go and have another "enjoy"
