Rubbing has always been a stock technique of pastellists. It's a widely accepted method for underpainting. But the joy of pastel painting is the use of the drawn mark to create interest and texture. Rubbing was once used to create softly modelled portraits - currently gone out of fashion.
You are on the right path to follow John Blockley's method.Have a look at PS members work on the Pastel Society website Moira Huntly and Bob Last show some interesting work Here's the URL
