Mmmm, yes, I've just seen on my latest tube of oil colour - MADE IN FRANCE. time for a change I think, I'm not here to support the French economy. Yes, the Rowney site says that they manufacture and export to 90 countries from their Bracknel site, so all new tubes will come from Rowneys for me in the future. They have three manufacturing sites, two in the UK, colours and boards, and one in the Domincan Republic, brushes.bestMick

Sharp practice in the selling of watercolours? Well if that's not a sure sign of the decline of civilization, I don't know what is..... W & N, like all companies, will come under pressure to reduce the amount of heavy metals in their paint - but so far as I know, the cadmiums are still available from them and their range hasn't reduced. I shall take a look at the Jacksons Art site to confirm that - it doesn't make a lot of sense on the face of it; if W & N paint is now produced in France, well so is Sennelier; and they still offer cadmiums....<div>

Got the same email - I don't know the answer, but even if there is VAT on top, the prices are a lot lower than I can find in the shops (the SAA might be a different matter, I don't know; I haven't shopped there yet). Your bringing this thread back to life reminds me that I was going to look to see if W & N still make cadmium colours, as I was sure they did: and of course - they do.

I am gradually moving to Artists quality watercolour paints and to pigments that are as transparent as possible. I bought a small tube of W+N Raw Sienna. I test each new paint I get and despite their Raw Sienna supposedly being transparent, it turned out to be the most opaque pigment I've tested. The 'contact us' part of W+N website gives an address and email contact in USA. I complained that I only bought the paint because it was advertised as transparent and thought they would simply reply and offer to replace it. That was two weeks ago and despite sending a reminder, they haven't even bothered to reply. Great customer service!

I am sure winsor and newton would not say a watercolor was transparent if it were not,, after all they have been making them many years
some times we look at the art of the old pure watercolor artists, and think, how did they get that painting so clean and fresh .they must be using transparent paints... but
that's not so is it not true. that any watercolor paint that is applied thick is not transparent ,but when applied thin is,
I mean you can use acrylics thin and they are lovely and transparent
I use raw sienna and it is transparent ,and its a fact
all paints are opaque when thick,
,you will get used to them take your time we all did .
or buy some brusho
