Hi ,i do hear what you are saying and to a certain extent i agree as we all work very hard to get known and established in our own fields of art. The odd artist may have a very very lucky break and be seen early and fly off into the distance bypassing the many years of exhibits publicity volunteer work etc.... etc.... As far as celebrities using their own names and going into the field of art as an established artist does seam a little unfair however i haven't seen Tony curtis's artwork so i cant really comment on his work as he could be well established and talented in his field. Ok i just looked at his works online and though it is not my kind of art .I have seen similar styles going for big money by other artists. I think Mr Curtis has been painting for a while as one of his paintings had curtis 61 at end of his signature. I think it was the Hawaiian volcano. If there is no talent in their art when a celebrity goes public and takes advantage of their name that is their personal choice to do so and i certainly wouldn't buy one of their works at no price but why do you think its being shown? It is because the galleries are the one's exhibiting their works and looking for the big commissions regardless of ability or experience obviously in some cases. Well thats a snippit of my general thoughts on this posting. Also art is in they eye of the beholder and what i hate someone else may love!! P.S Lived in Hope B.C for many years and love Vancouver.
Galleries love well established names. ! When the world knows you, actors etc... do not have to work hard to have a sale! However some are really talented painters and it would be a shame to hide it because of their other status. So my view : If a talented well known celebrity shows their art work I applaude, as for the rest, I feel as you do.
When Ive seen this happen I tend to make the assumption that its down to the fact that they are creative people...I express myself in many different ways within the creative field, some more successfully than others ;)
Mellotex paper seems to be increasingly popular with graphite artists, both amateur and professional. Mike Sibley uses it. For example Ultra white 250gms archival acid free paper ( Mike Sibley sells this). Has anyone else tried drawing on other heavyweight printer / copier paper? If so, what is your opinion?
