Editors Welcome in The Artist

Sally Bulgins comments about the resurgence of drawing are welcome and true in her editorial on the Portrait Painters exhibition, and I dare say her comments will used by readers as another excuse to have a go at modern art with its lack of drawing skills etc. But I wonder sometimes if this is just to deflect criticism from our own good selves sometimes. I think that amateur and semi professional artists who read this mag will nod sagely and agree with the need for drawing and then go back to their photos of their hols and knock up a quick painting of Venice or whereever at home. It is representational artists who need the drawing skills, not the modern art lot whose skills lie in other directions. I think sometimes we use modern artists to deflect criticism away from ourselves.
