I'd never drawn with Graphite until I went to Jamie Boots workshop at Nature in Art a few weeks ago. He had us drawing a Rhino head on a sheet of hot pressed Fabriano watercolour paper. His way of working must be very time consuming but the effects he uses are remarkable.
He stresses that to achieve the best results requires use of the finest graphite mined in Austria. It's available in both stick and pencil form from several makers - look closely at the specs. in catalogues. You can see Jamie's drawing at:-
