It was good to read Charles Williams explanation of his approach tom life drawing this month, and in particular his rubbishing of this idea that the head goes into the body so many times, 7? 71/2? 8?. This formula may be ok if you are drawing out an imaginary scene and this was how it was used, for instance in the renaissance for frescos, but it has no place in observational drawing, as so many factors can affect body/ head size, for instance the individulal being drawn, whether they are foreshortened either from the feet or head or where you the artist is in relation to the model. My prefered unit of measurement is to take a measurement across the body, say the waist, and see how many "waists" go into the height. This way you are dealing directly with the basic fundamentals of proportion, judging the height against the width, not just vertically. All in all a good article.
