Hello! I just found this site and wondered if anyone who actually has a Craig Young watercolor box, can give me more information. I ordered two of the boxes, the Paintbox and the Sketcher's box back at the beginning of May. I won't get them for another couple of months-October, but wondered how heavy these actually are. I wanted something made of long lasting heavy metal, and these seemed to fit. Anyone that has one, could you tell me how happy you were with yours? Are they heavier than you thought? I think of these as a lifetime investment and I can't stop watching Charles Reid's videos where he uses his. Monique
Wow, this was an old thread. Though I agree - if the content is interesting then it doesn't matter how old it is. The great watercolour palette collector in these parts is Alan Owen - maybe he'll be along to offer a tip or two. And Syd Edward recommends the Liz Deakin palette, which I can certainly endorse. A really top-whack metal palette is a bit beyond my present means, and they're rare beasts: as a contributor up above remarked, the great quality ones of yesteryear are hard to find now. But if you do, I should take the plunge and snap it up - painting isn't easy; having good quality equipment makes it far more pleasurable, and rewarding. If I painted in w/colour more often, I'd save up for the best I could get.
I was looking for a new palette for my travelling kit and, based on Syd's advice, I purchased a Liz Deakins palette. It is a little smaller than my previous unnamed palette and expensive for what it is (a simple plastic folding palette) but that ain't a bad thing - does the trick admirably - thanks Syd. Must add I use a much larger palette in the studio - again unnamed, but I've seen something similar for just a few pounds on line and it serves me admirably.
I found the large palette box heavy 16 0nz and sold it on with the tiny brass finished box it was to fiddly ,for years I have used the five hundred Holbien I hammer the thumb hole flat and cover. it. with a piece of white plastic ,,and give it a coat of white enamel ,it is now showing signs of rust especially when you remove paint from the pan.. it tend s to come up and show the rust ; the left side well ,,,nearest to my.holding hand.. I make a layer of hot gun plastic ,,to stop the edge cutting into my thumb after.an hour or so use, I have the Craig young palette box it is only a little lighter 12 oz ,,,, but I shall be buying the five hundred holbien again,,,,but the 350 holbien is to small for me,
