Robert I think maybe there are oil pencils on the market now but not too sure, Linda I would be wary with doing that if you want to varnish your painting later .
I once used oil pastels then varnish....big no no . They just smeared and messed up . I suppose you could if you don’t want to varnish. I’d have a practice first. Though in my book anything goes .

This thread was supposed to have been closed, because the Ask Jackson's feature was ended - they won't (presumably) be looking at the questions. As to 'oil pencils', I'll look 'em up: but would want to know what they consist of - if it's largely or partly wax, I wouldn't mix them with oil paint, or try varnishing over them. But presumably Derwent give advice on their product?

I've looked them up - on Derwent's web-site. They have an oil core, but also contain wax - I would NOT use them with oil paint, though you can use them with oil solvents (Derwent are recommending Zest-it, but I suspect that's for environmental reasons rather than any technical specification: white spirit, turps/Sansodor, or any other solvent, should work just as well). They seem to be, fundamentally, a more accurate and controllable form of oil pastel, to be used as coloured pencils, not as another tool for oil painting as such.
