Very dangerous asking this on a magazines' website - 'cause we might identify the wrong magazines... but as you compel me to be frank, of all the magazines available, I found the most inspiring one the International Artist magazine, because although it was often crammed with typos, which our own magazines are not, it is printed on high quality colour presses, it's big both in image size and number of pages, and it covers artists from all over the world. I don't take it any more, for reasons of space, though.
I don't know that I've ever been inspired by a book - encouraged, informed, assisted, yes. DVDs and YouTube films can be inspiring, if only because you see someone painting away and think "oh come on! I could do better than that!" - but the watching of someone wielding a brush usually makes me want to wield my own.

My son bought me a wonderful book called "Art The Definitive Visual Guide" - is what is says on the tin- oops cover. As to publications, I subscribe to two art magazines - The Artist (of course) and this is my favourite, no kidding - because of the format. Artists & Illustrators, which is very good but has a few too many adverts in and I am also a member of SAA (Society For All Artists) where you get a member's discount on art products and a bi-monthly magazine entitled "Paint". Also I have learnt a great deal from You Tube, although I have to say that there is a danger for me if I see too many videos because they all have their own methods and I think "which one is the best"?

I've always loved art magazines and find them very inspiring, and I've kept them for years and years because I can't bear to throw them away!
The Artist is my favourite, both for interesting content and that the adverts are not overly intrusive. Artists and Illustrators isn't a patch on what it used to be twenty years ago, in my opinion. There seems a bit too much gloss and advertising in proportion to readable content to me now.
I used to get International Artist for years and it certainly is packed full of good clear images as you'd expect in a painting magazine but I find it so strongly favours very traditional realist work that I was rarely seeing anything more impressionist or 'painterly'.
I also subscribe to the American 'Plein air' magazine which I do like although it's about 50% advertising as seems to be the norm with American mags.
I do wish occasionally for more thought provoking, meaty content, perhaps delving into an artist's thought processes through interviews rather than this current emphasis on how one applies the medium.
