The last three are also much more to my liking - it would be ironic if these were his earlier works; do we know the dates?
We inevitably try to paint what we think will sell, if selling - or anyway making a living so we can keep painting all day - is our motivation; and probably it helps to shift our stuff, to put it oh-so romantically, if we reflect the tastes of the day: so a few bouncing bairns, and images of domestic harmony, one with Nature and all that, probably were very popular when some of the earlier paintings were made (earlier in this thread that is, I must try to research his dates of production). If we've not had to rely on sales, or not been able to - why can't we live parallel lives, eh? Why does paid work have to consume so much of our time? - maybe we're better able to disregard those commercial pressures.
But that's speculating about this artist, who might quite possibly have included figures in his paintings because he just liked to do that ... though I still wouldn't care to go picnicing in the Australian bush - you never know what might crawl under the cloth and introduce itself with the flourish of a hairy leg, or.... no, I feel quite queasy now....
