Said I’d keep the thread going until Paul’s feeling better. A quick look back at some of David Hockney’s work over the years starting with a couple of his recent iPad paintings and finishing with a (1955) self portrait.  Haven’t had time to do a write up, but don’t think he really needs an introduction. “If you see the world as beautiful, thrilling and mysterious as I think I do, then you feel quite alive.” “The moment you cheat for the sake of beauty you know you are an artist.”

I love Hockney! I’ve done a fair few copies….which one is this a part of?
Marjorie, I remember this from a challenge we had on the forum a while ago - Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy.

Ha ha - yes!
Nothing about Hockney I dislike….I’m a superfan!
Terrific stuff, love Hockney’s work. I watched all four of Sky’s recent documentaries, lots of overlap in them but interesting nonetheless. I saw Mr&Mrs Clarke and Percy when it was on show in Dulwich some years ago(it’s huge). Useless fact from the Sky documentary is that the white cat in the picture wasn’t actually Percy, but the Clarke’s other cat.  Thanks for posting this thread Jenny.
I admire Hockney's work, but some of it makes me wonder if he wasn't so famous, would it get any attention?  The first two posted by Jenny leave me stone cold.  He recently did a series of portraits that I thought were great. He's undoubtedly a great artist.
The first two are Ipad paintings - some I like, some I don't, these two are a bit bland, for Hockney - but then, I doubt that I could do it: I can't even start the Ipad I've got .... entered the wrong password too often.  Yes, I know how to recover it all, but - suddenly, life just seemed too short to bother with it! Back to Hockney.... I think he's a genius; doesn't mean I always appreciate his genius, but what comes thudding through even in this small selection is the sheer variety of styles and techniques, in all of which he excels - I don't know if he ever taught in art colleges, but if he didn't, he should have done.  If ever I make a million (not looking likely, even though I sold a painting this week!) I'll have a baronial hall with at least a couple of super-sized Hockneys on its walls.   I doubt, to take up Lew's point, that some of his Ipad pictures would get the attention they receive if we weren't aware of their creator - but of course the name he's made for himself ensures that we do pay them attention; the fact that he's still working (and smoking.... maybe don't dwell on that .. at, what is he, 86?) is encouraging to all of us who are pushing life's wheel-barrow to the last allotment.
A short while ago I bought his latest book “ Spring cannot be cancelled” - David H in Normandy and it’s in collaboration with Martin Gayford ( who records H’s musings on just about everything eg. his fondness for tripe and cigarettes). During lockdown Hockney was in his cottage in Normandy, it’s a lovely book to dip into with lots of illustrations. Some illustrations from the book ( below ). Excuse the wonkiness, the book is newish and the pages don’t lie flat. Above all, I admire his continuing quest to try new ideas…and I love that Bradford accent still coming through.
I have never been a huge fan of Hockney. While I appreciate his originality his work leaves little if anything to the imagination of the viewer which leaves me somewhat uninterested and immediately passing on to the next painting! My daughter has a print of the log scene above on her wall which I quite like.  I also quite like the last portrait which has a feel of Van Goch about it and the dark landscape which I wouldn’t recognise as a Hockney.
Like others, I find his paintings striking but can't always decide if I like them or not.  I did buy his book 'Secret Knowledge' on the methods used by the old masters and was blown away.  It showed what a keen eye and sharp mind he really has.
