Although I took Art at A-level back in the early 1960s, I've not done any painting since. I've always been happy sketching in pencil and pen-and-ink, but have never added colour! A couple of years ago I bought some cheap water-colour paints from The Works (I think a dozen tubes cost me four pounds) but still found it hard to get started; about a year ago I finally bit the bullet and started experimenting, although I still struggled to do anything 'proper'.
Anyway, things seem to have taken off in the last couple of months, and last week I tried a snow scene with not much success, so was pleased to see the recent 'Leisure Painter' with Robert Newcombe's article on Christmas Scenes; that in turn has brought me to this website and provided the inspiration to really get started ...
I've always been a keen photographer and still have a 'film' mentality - I will spend ages carefully composing a single shot, whereas most people fire off a dozen shots and then select the best. so hopefully that will aid me in my painting compositions, but I still have a lot to learn.

Hi Mike, hope you enjoy the POL Gallery and Forum. I am a relatively new user myself - think I started posting in the Gallery in June - and really just got active on Forum in last couple of weeks. I have found people very welcoming, friendly and encouraging - I am sure you will too.
Thought your contributions to the January challenge were lovely - your photography has obviously given you a good idea for composition :)
One thing, like you (and probably most people) I started with cheaper materials (and still using up some of them!) but have found that better quality paper and watercolour paint does make painting more enjoyable.
