My name is Candra Hope and I'm a freelance artist/illustrator from Scotland. I paint landscapes and scenery for local galleries and fantasy/horror illustration for independent authors/publishers, magazines and for the love of it. I paint mostly in oils, though sometimes I'll venture into watercolour or ink. I also paint digitally using Painter12 and Photoshop because it helps me see details (see below). I'm registered blind with Retinitis Pigmentosa. Its an inherited condition that makes me go slowly blind - I'm down to 10 degrees of functional central vision. I struggle a lot with light and dark - I cant see well in either extreme - and I also struggle to see close-up details in paintings, so I've started working digitally to help with that. That said, it hasnt stopped me from doing art most of my life, and I'll continue until I cant anymore. I used to use forums regularly but they're mostly a dying breed so I've been on facebook for the last few years. But its not ideal so I'm back looking for the structured discussion format a forum gives me. Here's hoping I find that here. Anyway, thats a little about me, apologies for the long post :) Looking forward to meeting new faces and getting back into forum life. P.S. For what its worth, I had to hunt for this introduction section. Would you consider moving it nearer the top of the page?
Welcome Candra, hopefully you will enjoy the forum as there are a number of knowledgeable and amusing members...unfortunately I do not number among the knowledgeable! Your ability to cope with your sight problems is very humbling, I struggle to produce work I'm happy with and I have no such impediment. Not sure about fantasy/horror illustration, I used to hide behind the sofa as a youngster when Dr Who was on the box.
Thanks for the welcome guys! And apologies for the slow reply :) Thanks also for your kind words about my eye condition. I've learned tricks over the years to make doing art easier but its still tough so in a way, I guess I'm well equipped to understand the struggle we all face trying to realise our art ideas. Sylvia, yeah, forums can be dificult to get used to, especially when they're all so different and have their own quirks. I noticed the gallery here but havent uploaded anything yet. I wasnt sure if I could right away? I also don't know if I'm allowed to post links to other sites yet but just in case, here's a link to my website so you can see some of my stuff. Its mostly fantasy and gallery work there but I'll try putting a couple of older horror pieces in the gallery shortly - Candragonart
Welcome Candra, I'm sure you will enjoy the chat here. I've looked at your web site and your work is amazing! I'm glad you have started to put your work on the gallery here and we look forward to seeing more.
Hi Candra! Just had a look at your work on Artstation and it's pretty flipping amazing! Love the rods and kustoms, I'm a petrolhead so they definitely do it for me. Interesting to hear you work digitally in Photoshop - I do a lot of work in Creative Suite in my day job but I've never really 'painted' in Photoshop. Might have to give it a go some time :) Anth.
Thanks so much everyone, for the welcomes and for checking out my art! I'm so glad you like my stuff :) Anth, thanks re my cars, I'm a bit of a petrolhead myself, or was in my girl racer days lol, so I had lots of fun painting those. I found photoshop a bit of a hassle to paint in so I shifted to Painter, which is much more artist friendly. Photoshop does have brushes and lots of artists, illustrators, and concept artists in the gaming and film industry, use it exclusively so its definitely worth giving it a go. I just couldnt get used to the lack of brushstroke blendability in photoshop so yeah... I gave up lol. Syd, thats good to hear re the 4 pictures max for gallery uploads. As you've noticed, I'm already colonising it with my stuff :) I'll also try to make some comments elsewhere around the forum, and try to get faces and art styles sorted out in my head. Lots to see and do here, and it has a nice relaxed but professional feel to it which I like.
Aw wow cool! If you have any photos I'd love to see them! I always loved Mustangs, especially Mr Steve McQueen's iconic one in Bullitt. Also, Plymouth Barracudas, GTO's and of course, Vanishing Point's Challenger :) By the way, are you on Artstation yourself? Let me know and I'll follow you.
I'm not on Artstation, but I'll have a look at it tonight! Owned a few muscle cars over the years, just got a Mini now though. I'm saving any extra-curricular sales-of-paintings money to put towards the purchase of another '58 Plymouth in a few years time. I've got some of my car stuff up on my Gallery page on here, any C+C welcome :)
Hm, I've been looking on your and a couple other people's profiles and cant find your galleries. Is there a separate place for those?
Yes - go to the Gallery page, and type the name of the person you seek into the search box; then - provided they use the same name on the forum as they do on the gallery, and here, I fear, is the rub - you should find them.
Here's my profile, this will show you my gallery stuff: http://www.painters-online.co.uk/artist/AnthKnight If you want to see the real cars, now we're FB buddies have a look in my photos - there are a few albums, one with a lot of my stuff over the years, one with my Holy Grail motor ('58 Plymouth 2 door coupe) and one with the Olds Cutlass I owned in 2013. Anth
Aha, thanks Robert, I'll try that method :) Anth, I just checked out your gallery here, and on facebook. Thanks for the friend request by the way :) Loved all the car photos, especially those wee escorts :) I always wanted one when I was young but could only afford fiestas. I had about three mk1's over the years which were loads of fun to drive. I also had a mini which was... interesting to drive. Probably because it was a poor example of a mini that felt like I was driving a small recalcitrant bus lol. Its been years since I saw Christine so I couldnt remember what the car looked like but seeing your photos reminded what a sexy lady she is. I'll have to find some good photos and try a painting sometime. Your car paintings are fantastic. I can really see your progression from the earlier to later stuff. Your confidence with shapes and rendering shows through really well now. I love the scrapyard painting in particular though, lovely work on the rusted parts and paint. By the way, not sure if its just my browser but a lot of your photobucket images in your early threads arent showing for me. I'd love to see the blue ferrari but its not there for some reason. Anyway, just thought you should know. I followed you here so hopefully I'll get notifications on any new work you post. Thanks for the gallery link :)
